Twelve Misunderstandings of Kin Selection By RICHARD DAWKINS

ثبت نشده
چکیده

HAMILTON’S theory of kin selection is much misunderstood. This paper lists and refutes 12 of the commonest misunderstandings, for example: “Kin selection is a special, complex kind of natural selection, as opposed to ‘individual selection’”; “Kin selection is a form of group selection”; “All species members share the majority of their genes, so selection should favour universal altruism”, “Kin selection only works for rare genes”, “Individuals should tend to inbreed, simply because that brings close relatives into thc world”. The exposing of common errors such as these is a constructive, not a destructive, exercise.

Ehics Captured by the Genes; A Survey on Richard Dawkin’s Opinions about Ethics Based on the Theory of Evolution

As an evolutionist biologist, Dawkins has commented on some non-biological fields of knowledge such as ethics. Regarding ethics, he has utilized different areas of knowledge like social biology, evolutionary psychology, genetics etc. The most important aspect of Dawkins theory is that he negates any form of moral distinction between human and animals. His concerns about dealing with ethics orig...

Persistent Misunderstandings of Inclusive Fitness and Kin Selection: Their Ubiquitous Appearance in Social Psychology Textbooks

Inclusive fitness theory and kin selection theory are among the most recognizable theories associated with evolutionary biology and psychology—they are also among the most widely misunderstood. The problem begins early, in undergraduate psychology textbooks. Here, ten social psychology textbooks were reviewed, and they were all found to contain at least one form of misunderstanding. Because the...

Misunderstandings of Kin Selection and the Delay in Quantifying Ethnic Kinship

This paper discusses likely causes of a thirty-year delay in quantifying the kinship, or relatedness, between random members of ethnic groups. The introduction consists of reporting that quantification (Harpending 2002; Salter 2002), briefly discussing its constituent theoretical steps, and pointing to its theoretical importance. The main goal is to discuss some of the misconceptions that delay...

Speciation: Goldschmidt's Heresy, Once Supported by Gould and Dawkins, is Again Reinstated

The view that the initiation of branching into two sympatric species may not require natural selection emerged in Victorian times (Fleeming Jenkin, George Romanes, William Bateson). In the 1980s paleontologist Steven Jay Gould gave a theoretical underpinning of this non-genic “chromosomal” view, thus reinstating Richard Goldschmidt’s “heresy” of the 1930s. From modelling studies with computer-g...

An Agent-Based Model of Group Selection

Mathematical models have shown that under some conditions natural selection can favor cooperative traits that benefit groups as a whole, but reduce individual fitness relative to the rest of their group (Sober and Wilson 1998). Unlike those in mathematical models however, groups in the real world may not be significant vehicles of selection because they are too few in number, too long in genera...
